Stanley Kubrick’s “Manhattan Project”: How Two Experimental Filmmakers Contributed to 2001: A Space Odyssey

It was December 1964, and Stanley Kubrick had a problem: no one wanted his new movie.

My latest essay (four years in the making!) is the untold story of how two New York underground filmmakers, Fredric Martin and Jack Malick, helped Kubrick in the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey - told through their words, the memories of their friends and relatives, materials from the archives, etc.

The article is available here and in the fall 2021 issue of Filmmaker Magazine.

Special thanks to Mark Lentz and Gerry Flahive for the additional interviews, to Robert Schuhmann and Gary Malick for their precious memories, and to the several members of the '2001' crew that helped me putting together the pieces over the years.
